Have You Tried Hash Browns in the Air Fryer Yet?
Hey there, Jenny here! If you haven’t made hash browns in your air fryer yet, you’re seriously missing out. Once you try this mess-free, crispy, and fast method, you won’t want to go back to stovetop or oven-baked versions again. Promise!
Why Air Frying Is a Game-Changer for Hash Browns
Some foods were born for the air fryer—and hash browns are at the top of the list. They come out unbelievably crispy, golden brown, and ready in under 20 minutes. Whether you’re making them fresh from scratch or using frozen patties, this is hands-down the easiest way to get perfect hash browns every time.
🥔 What Potatoes Work Best?
I tested both Yukon Gold and Russet potatoes, and here’s what I found:
👉 Yukon Golds
- Waxy skin (you don’t even have to peel them!).
- Lower starch helps the shreds stay separate = extra crispy texture.
- Naturally buttery flavor.
👉 Russets
- Higher starch means they stick together well (great for patty-style hash browns).
- Thicker skin, so I recommend peeling.
- Classic flavor and still super crispy.
Jenny’s Tip: If you want that diner-style hash brown patty, go with Russets. If you love that lacy, crispy edge, Yukon Golds are your BFF!

🔑 The Secret to Crispy Hash Browns
The key is removing excess starch and moisture. Here’s how I do it:
- After shredding the potatoes (box grater works great!), rinse them in cold water until the water runs mostly clear.
- I usually rinse 2-3 times—this helps prevent them from sticking and promotes extra crispiness.
- Dry them completely. I press them between paper towels or use a clean kitchen towel. If they’re wet, they’ll steam instead of crisp up!

👩🍳 How to Make Air Fryer Hash Browns
From Scratch (Shredded Potatoes):
- Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Spray the air fryer basket with nonstick spray or a light coat of olive oil.
- Layer the shredded potatoes evenly—not too thick!
- Lightly spritz the top with oil (optional but helps with browning).
- Air fry for 8 minutes.
- Flip or stir gently, then cook another 6-8 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
Using Frozen Hash Brown Patties:
- Preheat air fryer to 380°F (193°C).
- Place frozen patties in a single layer.
- Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through.

🍳 What to Serve With Air Fryer Hash Browns
I love mine with:
- Sunny-side-up eggs
- A drizzle of hot sauce (trust me!)
- Avocado slices or guacamole
- A breakfast casserole
- Or just straight from the air fryer basket 😄

❓ Jenny’s Pro Tips & FAQs
Do I have to peel Yukon Gold potatoes?
Nope! I often leave the skins on for extra texture and fiber.
Why are my hash browns mushy?
You probably didn’t squeeze out enough moisture. Get those shreds super dry before cooking!
Can I make them ahead?
Totally! Air fry, cool completely, and freeze. Reheat at 350°F for 5-6 minutes.
❤️ Final Thoughts
Air Fryer Hash Browns are a total breakfast (or brunch!) game-changer. They’re crispy, fast, and healthier than pan-fried versions. Whether you use Yukon Golds for that lacey crunch or Russets for a classic diner patty, you’ll end up with something crave-worthy.
So, grab your potatoes and let’s air fry!
Happy cooking, Jenny

Air Fryer Hash Browns
- Total Time: 23 mins
Description
Although it is not required, you can preheat your air fryer following the instruction manual
Ingredients
- 2 cups grated Yukon potatoes
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- Nonstick spray
- Chives or parsley, garnish
Instructions
- Peel and grate the potatoes:
Peel the potatoes and grate them with a box grater on the large holes.
- Rinse the potatoes:
Add the grated potatoes to a bowl with cold water. Rinse the potatoes a few times until the water is mostly clean. Drain off as much water as possible from the potatoes.
Alternatively, you can rinse the potatoes in a colander, but some potatoes might slip through the colander holes!
- Dry the potatoes:
Remove the potatoes from the bowl and spread them out over a few paper towels and dry them well.
- Season the potatoes:
Then add grated potatoes to a large bowl and season with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir with a spoon to season evenly.
- Air fry the hash browns:
Spray an air fryer basket with nonstick spray.
Spread out the hash browns in the basket of an air fryer in an even layer. Then spritz the hash browns with a little nonstick spray. It’s okay if they overlap or stack up some.
Close the air fryer basket and air fry the hash browns for 8 minutes at 350˚F.
- Stir the hash browns:
Open the air fryer basket and stir the potatoes gently using a wooden spoon so they cook evenly. If there are any clumps of potatoes, try to break them up. The potatoes might start to take on some color on the edges, which is good!
- Finish cooking the hash browns:
Close the basket again and then air fry them a second time for 6-8 minutes until they are very crispy.
- To serve:
Divide hash browns between plates and serve with eggs and sprinkled with fresh chives or parsley.
